Sino-Japan Workshop on Future Mobile Communication Technologies and Applications-2009 held in Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan

 International     |       2009/9/7

Sino-Japan workshop on Future Mobile Communication Technologies and Applications-2009 was held in Jiuzhaigou of Sichuan Province in China from September 2nd to 4th.

The workshop was hosted by FuTURE FORUM, Japan-China Information and Communication Technology Forum, YRP R&D Promotion Committee, and Radio Communication Systems Technical Committee, IEICE, and organized by National Key Lab of Communications of UESTC.

The workshop was jointly chaired by several famous Chinese and Japanese experts on mobile communication, including Prof. You Xiaohu from SEU, Prof. Wang Jing and Prof. Niu Zhisheng from Tsinghua University, Prof. Tan Zhenhui from Beijing Jiaotong University, Prof. Hong Wei from SEU, and Mr. MOTAI Akio, President of YRP, Prof. YOSHIDA Susumu from Kyoto University, Dr. OHMORI Shingo, Vice President of YRP, Prof. ADACHI Fumiyuki from Tohoku University

The workshop won great support from Chinese and Japanese governments, academy and industrial circle. Dr. Jiang Xiaoping, Director of Division of Asia and Africa of Department of International Cooperation of MOST, Mr. Fu Yaowei, Deputy Director of High-Tech Research & Development Center of MOST, Mr. SAKANAKA Yasushi, Director of Land Mobile Communication Division, Radio Department Telecommunications Bureau of MIC, and Mr. MIZUTANI Jun, Deputy Director of International Cooperation Division, Global ICT Strategy Bureau of MIC attended the workshop and gave important addresses. Over 70 experts from Chinese and Japanese reputed universities, research institutes, and communication enterprises such as Tsinghua University, SEU, UESTC, China Mobile Research Institute, CATR, Huawei, ZTE, Datang, DoCoMo, NiCT, Kyoto University, Tohoku University, Sophia University, University of Electro-Communications, and Fujitsu.

Dr. Jiang Xiaoping addressed in his speech that China has been attaching great importance to international cooperation. In addition to 973 and 864 programs, certain international cooperative plans science and technology were specially set up. Being members of Asia, China and Japan share great similarities in social background and requirements, so he hopes that the Sino-Japan workshop will result in more cooperative programs instead of simply academic communication. Mr. Fu Yaowei believed that the communication and cooperation between China and Japan will generate remarkable impact on the development of future mobile communication in Asia and even all over the world, and will also greatly promote the R&D of advanced wireless mobile communication technologies.

Three major subjects were covered in the workshop, namely the Next Generation Mobile Communication Network Technologies and Strategic Development, Short Range Wireless Communication and Intelligent Transportation System. The Next Generation Mobile Communication Network Section concerns the key technologies, service and application, and network architectures. Mr. SAKANAKA Yasushi, Director of Land Mobile Communications Division, Radio Department Telecommunications Bureau of MIC, introduced the latest progresses of Japanese mobile communication technologies, and Prof. You Xiaohu, Secretary-General of FuTURE FORUM, introduced the development of TD and TD-LTE technologies in China and China’s medium-and-long-term scientific and technological development plan (2005-2020). Many hotspots were fully discussed in this section including, green communication, the next generation mobile transmission technology, Key LTE-A technology and its standardization, coordinative relay, and distributed network architecture, and indoor distributed antenna system.

Short Range Wireless Communication is a highlight spot on this workshop. As the important candidate scheme for the next generation short range ultra-high speed wireless communication technology, the application of 60GHz ROT and UWB technology are the two crucial subjects for this workshop.

ITS is an integrate technology applied in transportation management system. It is expected that ITS technology can help to monitor transportation environment, control traffic, and provide transportation information so as to realize safer and more effective public transportation. On this workshop, full discussion was given to certain aspects such as the opportunities and challenges faced by ITS, ITS network technologies and ITS application models.

Sino-Japan workshops have been successively organized for 4 years, jointly promoted by FuTURE FORUM and YRP. Experts from China and Japan brought their latest achievements to share and fully discussed on the workshop. Through years of efforts, Sino-Japan workshop on the next generation mobile communication technologies and applications has grown into an important communication platform between China and Japan which has been playing a significant role to promote the inter-governmental and civil communication and cooperation between the two countries. The year of 2009 carried great significance for the development of mobile communication. ITU has started the standardization of the next generation mobile communication technologies and Chinese operators have formally launched their 3G commercial services. Japanese operators announced in 2009 that they will start LTE commercialization in 2010. Mr. MOTAI Akio, President of YRP, defined the 2009 workshop as a very important event at this crucial moment for the development of the global mobile communication technologies.
