From June 16 to 17 of 2011, Workshop on Broadband Wireless Mobile Internet Development Strategy was held in Wuhan. The workshop, hosted by FuTURE FORUM and organized by HUST, was highly supported by Wuhan municipal party committee, MIIT, and Ministry of Education, attended by the leaders from relative departments, including Mr. FENG Jichun, member of Wuhan Municipal Committee of CPC and the former director of Department of High and New Technology Development and Industrialization of MOST, Mr. YUAN Ruiqing, Director of Wuhan Communication Administration, Mr. LI Hengshuai, Division Director from SRRC, Prof. YANG Yong, President of HUST, and Mr. QIANG Xiaozhe, Vice Director of the Administrative Committee of Wuhan East Lake Hi-Tech Development Zone. The workshop was hosted by Prof. YOU Xiaohu, Secretary-General of FuTURE FORUM, Prof. ZHU Guangxi from HUST, Prof. WANG Jing from Tsinghua University, Prof. WEI Guo from USTC, and Prof. LI Shaoqian from UESTC. Speeches were given by over 30 experts from the operators, manufacturers, research institutes and universities, including China Mobile, China Telecom, Microsoft Research Asia, CAS, Huawei, ZTE, Xidian University, SEU, Ericsson, BUPT, UESTC, and Alcatel-Lucent.

Mr. FENG Jichun, member of Wuhan Municipal Committee of CPC, made an address on the workshop, in which he indicated that the emerging industries represented by wireless mobile communication broadband and Internet keep growing and drawing wide attention. Mobile Internet combines the two industries which have been most rapidly and actively developed to open a new informational age supported by billions of users. Mobile Internet brings not only technical innovation but also innovation in thoughts and modes, which result in new service patterns and commercial modes. Mr. FENG hopes that this workshop will provide new opportunity to promote the development of the emerging strategic industry in Wuhan.

The workshop covers two major subjects, Mobile Internet and Broadband Wireless Access. Mobile Internet session focuses on Mobile Internet relative technologies and applications, including cloud computing, effective wireless access, mobile Internet oriented smart channels, mobile Internet router technologies and security issues in mobile Internet. And the position of operators in the mobile Internet industry is also discussed on the workshop. It is widely agreed that with the diversification of Internet communication services, the multipolarity of the operating entities and the explosive growth of mobile data services, the operators are facing with huge challenges in service quality and operation modes. With such background, it is the inevitable choice for the operators to improve network utilization through the cooperation with other operating entities on the chain, the realization of the channel value, and the smart flow management. In addition, the deficiency in mobility support of the traditional Internet was also discussed, on which the experts proposed to separate the identities and positions.

Various broadband wireless access technologies were covered in the broadband wireless access session, including UWB, wifi, femtocell, and 60G broadband wireless mobile technologies. 60GHz broadband wireless mobile technology, featured by rich spectrum resource and high data transmission rate, rises rapidly in short-range communication field. China has included 60GHz as the major subjects in 863 plan, and researching on some relative subjects such as general MMW and THz technologies and high-rate base band signals processing technologies, 6GHz RF CMOS Chips and Modules, and all solid-state THz high-rate wireless communication system.
