The overall certification conference for the FuTURE Project under National 863 Plan successfully held in Shanghai

The overall certification conference for the FuTURE Project under National 863 Plan and the 4G Mobile Communication Field Trial System was successfully held in Shanghai Royalton Hotel on October 31st of 2006. The conference was attended by over 100 representatives including the leaders of relevant departments of MOST, MII and Shanghai Municipal Government, the experts specially invited from Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), members of the FuTURE Project Expert Group, and the principals from over ten units responsible for the R&D of the FuTURE Project.

The conference was hosted by Mr. Song Zhiyuan, Director of Communication Technology Committee of MII and Principal of the certification expert group. At first, Mr. Qiang Xiaozhe, Director of Division of Information,Dept. of High Tech. Development & Industrialization of MOST, introduced the FuTURE Project and reviewed the establishment and development of the project. Then, Prof. You Xiaohu, Principal of the FuTURE Project Expert Group, made “An Overall Report on the R&D of B3G Technology”, in which he introduced in details the background, objectives, executive plan and actual implementation of the FuTURE Project, the achievements that had been gained during the five years after the launch of National 863 Plan, as well as the innovations on the field trial system and key technology. The experts from Southeast University, BUPT and Shanghai Research Center for Wireless Communications who have been participating in the FuTURE Project such as Southeast University, BUPT and Shanghai Research Center for Wireless Communications respectively gave lectures titled by “Report on R&D of B3G FDD trial system technology”, “Report on R&D of B3G TDD trial system technology” and “Report on B3G trial system testing”. They made a systematical introduction of the fourth generation mobile communication field trial system based on distributed wireless network that was constructed in Shanghai and an important analysis on the key technological features of the FuTURE trial system, including RoF distributed wireless cells, Hybrid FDD/TDD Mode, GMC/OFDM, environmental adaptation capability, distributed MIMO, iterative receiving technology, Fast Antenna Selection Technique, DMA Cell Configuration Technique, software and hardware united testing platform, 40-100Mbps large coverage, 2-10bps/Hz spectrum utilization, compatibility of low power and high electromagnetism. After the report meeting, the experts conducted an on-site inspection in the testing field, and examined mobile performance at high speed on the testing cars. In addition, the functions of wireless transmission and the processing of interactive high-definition images in mobile environments were demonstrated in the field such as video conference and video program order. At last, all the experts addressed high marks on the FuTURE Project and unanimously agreed to approve the certification.

On the afternoon of November 1st, Mr. Xu Guanhua, Minister of MOST, accompanied by Mr. Feng Jichun, Director General of Department of High and New Technology Development and Industrializationof MOST, and over 20 leaders from Shanghai Municipal Government and the Science & Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, listened to the conclusive report on the FuTURE Project made by Prof. You Xiaohu and viewed the demonstration on the spot. Minister Xu and Director Feng both made high compliments on the achievements obtained in the FuTURE Project and greatly appreciated the devotion and innovation of the experts and staff participating in the R&D of the project. They hoped that all could continue to innovate during the implementation of the R&D of the pivotal program in the 11th Five Year Plan as well as to make remarkable contribution to the development of China’s next generation mobile communication technology.

In the open-day activities held in the trial field on November, representatives from more than 30 domestic and foreign enterprises and research institutes, including China Telecom, China Unicom, Huawei, ZTE, Datang Mobile, Siemens, Alcatel (Shanghai), Nokia, France Telecom, Ericsson, Motorola, ETRI and NTT DoCoMo, were invited to pay a visit to the trial field where they also heard the introduction of the experts. All the representatives showed great interest in and deemed quite highly of the achievements gained in the FuTURE Project and the on-site trials. The implementation of China’s FuTURE Project played a significant role in the promotion of China’s R&D in the mobile communication field and enabled China to become an important part in the development of the next generation mobile communication technology all over the world, while bringing along the development of 3G evolution technology including TD-SCDMA technology and greatly improving the sustainable developing ability of China mobile communication industry.
