On August 1, 2024, at the Millimeter Wave Working Group Meeting of the FuTURE Mobile Communication Forum, the White Paper - Innovative 5G Industrial Applications Based on Millimeter Wave was officially released. Hong Wei, Chairman of the Millimeter Wave Working Group and Chief Professor at Southeast University, introduced the white paper on behalf of the working group.

The deeply integrated application of 5G and the industrial internet has become an important force driving the economic and social digital transformation, and provides strong support for promoting new industrialization and building a modern industrial system. Industry is the major battlefield for 5G applications. As an important component of 5G, the mmWave frequency band has broad prospects for industrial applications.

The 5G mmWave has abundant spectrum resources and can achieve ultra-large bandwidth and ultra-low latency transmission. It is suitable for industrial scenarios which require ultra-high-speed, large-capacity, low latency, and high reliability. In addition to providing communication functions, mmWave technology also holds high-precision positioning and sensing capabilities to meet the needs of more complex application scenarios in intelligent manufacturing and low-altitude economy. It may effectively unleash the potential of communications technology, and promote the high-quality development of the real economy.

In this white paper, the international conditions, policy background, and technical characteristics of innovative industrial applications of mmWave are systematically elaborated. It focused on typical innovative application scenarios of 5G mmWave in the manufacturing industry, port industry, wind power industry, mining industry, etc. It is hoped that the release of the white paper will provide theoretical support for the formulation of relevant industrial policies and provide a useful reference for the development of 5G mmWave technology and innovative industrial applications.
