FuTURE Forum 6G Working Group Holds Meeting, Focuses on 6G Book Series Content and Explores Future Research Directions

The FuTURE Forum 6G Working Group meeting was held on the afternoon of December 16, 2026, in Beijing. The session focused on exchanging cutting-edge 6G research findings, sharing insights from the forthcoming book series, and defining the Working Group’s future research priorities. The discussions aimed to further consolidate consensus and promote the systematic and high-impact development of 6G research.

The core agenda of the meeting was dedicated to the 6G book series. Earlier that morning, the FuTURE Forum officially launched the 6G book series initiative. Built upon existing 6G white papers, the series systematically consolidates prior research consensus while deepening theoretical exploration and technical summarization. It is designed to establish a comprehensive knowledge framework for 6G technology and serve as a key vehicle for disseminating, exchanging, and promoting research outcomes. The series is expected to be published progressively by the end of 2026.

During the working group session, experts shared their insights on a range of key 6G topics, including:

  • Converged and diversified 6G networks
  • Cross-industry innovation and commercialization of 6G
  • Novel multiple access technologies
  • Satellite-terrestrial integrated coverage
  • Ultra-massive MIMO antenna technologies
  • User-centric 6G network architectures
  • Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC)

Regarding future research directions, the meeting also featured dedicated sessions on network architecture and integrated sensing and communication, with in-depth discussions focused on the 2026 research framework and key development priorities.

In the area of network architecture research, it was proposed to systematically advance the evolution of core 6G network architecture features in alignment with the 6G standardization process, while strengthening coordination with relevant standards organizations. Key aspects include:

  • Service-level features: emphasizing integration of communication, computing, and intelligence; integration of communication and sensing; and integration of space-air-ground networks.
  • Network functional planes: exploring the coordinated evolution of user plane, control plane, data plane, computing plane, and security plane.
  • Additional considerations cover infrastructure layers, management and orchestration layers, and protocol/interface characteristics.

In light of future technology convergence trends, the meeting also discussed expanding the scope of network architecture research. It was recognized that emerging technologies—such as wireless foundation models, Agentic AI, semantic communications, token-based communications, and AI-native cloud-native mobile communication networks—will profoundly impact future 6G network architectures. In addition, continued research on digital low?altitude network architectures will be pursued. The group agreed that these topics merit systematic study and should result in dedicated white papers.

In the area of integrated sensing and communication research, the meeting concluded that while continuing to advance multi?node cooperative sensing, it is necessary to proactively explore multi?source fusion sensing. This involves leveraging AI algorithms to integrate data from base stations, cameras, various sensors, and other sources, using the 6G network as a foundation to enable efficient interconnection of multidimensional sensing information. This approach will enhance overall perception capabilities and support emerging applications such as digital twin cities and environmental reconstruction.

On standardization and industrial deployment, the meeting proposed that existing sensing modes should be further consolidated to clarify standardization priorities. At the same time, efforts should be strengthened in testbed validation and iterative optimization of key technologies, while nurturing representative use cases to prepare for practical deployment.
