The Fifth Cross-Forum Meeting Successfully Held in Helsinki, Finland

 International     |       2007/6/13

On June 12, the principals of four top international organizations related to B3G technology, namely FuTURE MOBILE COMMUNICATION FORUM, mITF Forum of Japan, NGMC Forum of South Korea and WWRF of Europe gather in Helsinki, Finland again to participate in the 5th Cross-Forum Meeting.

11 representatives attended the meeting on behalf of China, including Professor You Xiaohu, Secretary-General of the FuTURE MOBILE COMMUNICATION FORUM, Ms. Wang Zhiqin, Deputy Director of The Research Institute of Telecommunications Transmission of MII, chairmen of the working group of FuTURE FORUM and representatives of some forum members. The attendees also include Dr. Nigel Jefferies from Vodafone who is also Chairman of WWRF, Contact Manager from WWRF, Dr. Werner Mohr from NSN, Dr. Fiona Williams from Ericsson, Dr. Seung Ku Hwang, Chairman of NGMC, Dr. Sung Moon Shin, Secretary-General of NGMC, and Dr. Masayasa Miyake from mITF.

On this meeting, the experts reviewed the content of the 21st and 22nd meeting of ITU WP8F, exchanged opinions on the IMT-A standards proposed on ITU-R Conference, and discussed the prospect of the R&D of key technology in future as well as the cooperation among the four forums.

On the meeting, Dr. Ma Ni from Philips, the vice chairman of WG1 of FuTURE FORUM delivered an investigation report on the demand for the future mobile communication system. Dr. Li Xiaoqiang, the vice chairman of WG4 and Dr. Guan Hao, chairman of WG5 respectively introduced the progresses of their groups in the research on radio access techniques as well as radio resources management and network architectures. Mr. Wang Hu from Huawei Technologies, on behalf of FuTURE FORUM, made a speech titled as “Retrospections of ITU IMT-A Work Plan and IMT Evaluation Contents in the 22nd Sub-meeting”.

Experts from the four forums focused on such issues as the retrospection of the viewpoints of different countries on the development of IMT-A technology proposed on ITU WPBF conference, the drafting of the circular letter for recruiting IMT-A candidate technologies, especially the discussions on and preparations for key contents such as relevant foundamental technical parameters and the system for evaluating the candidate technologies. They suggested that harder efforts should be made in the second half of the year in the research on the evaluation standards, channel models, and relevant scenarios in order to improve the research on frequency bands sharing and achieve the goals set in the circular letter that will be publicized on the next WP8F meeting to be held in January 2008. Additionally, the experts also exchanged their views concerning future user and system requirements, as well as the recruitment of IMT-A technological standard proposals for ITU-R conference that is supposed to be started in 2008.

The Cross-Forum Meeting, since its initiation in October of 2005, have been held twice each year and become an important international platform for communication and promotion of B3G technology and standards among various countries and regions. In recent years, 3G Evolution technology and IEEE 802 technology have been maintaining a rapid development the world wide while different countries, especially those possess the advanced communication technology, are endeavoring to develop novel technology and integrate the current technology with the whole industry. ITU will begin to recruit IMT-A standards in 2008 and expects to form and publicize a unified standard system by the end of 2010. While various advanced technologies are to converged with each other, FuTURE FORUM will continue to strengthen and promote the international communication and cooperation during the prophase research on IMT-A standards so that the Cross-Forum Meeting will play a more important role as a communicative platform.
