SPICE Expert Workshop on ICT Research Collaboration

On September 4th of 2007, SPICE Expert Workshop on ICT Research Collaboration, jointly organized by FuTURE FORUM, CATR, and Eutema Group from Austry, is held in Beijing, on which the experts from both Europe and China mainly focused on Scanning the Potentialities for Future ICT Research Collaboration between China and the European Union (SPICE Project).

The European Union (EU) and China support R&D collaboration of their research organizations in joint international projects, among which SPICE will create a solid basis for future EU-China collaboration in ICT research by identifying and analyzing potential topics and areas of research cooperation and initiatives between China and the European Union. The analysis and outcomes of SPICE will allow the European Commission to create targeted initiatives in thematic sub-areas of ICT.

On the workshop, Dr. Erich Prem, CEO of Eutema Group gave an overview of EU R&D in the field of leading wireless communication technologies and introduced the cooperation between China and EU in the 7th Framework Project. The experts, from CATR and members of FuTURE FORUM such a Southeast University, UESTC, HUST, SJTU and BUPT, respectively shared the background and experience they had in the international cooperation, and presented relative contents related to the R&D of B3G mobile communication technologies such as the B3G Cellular Mobile Communication Wireless Network Experiment System. In addition, the experts had a heated discussion and exchange of views on the potential of the cooperation between China and EU in the R&D of Information Communication Technologies. Ms. Alison BIRKETT,first counselor(information society and Media)of European Union Delegation of the European Commission attend the workshop and participated in the discussion.

Ms. Shi Youyan, Senior Manager of FuTURE FORUM Secretariat, made a brief introduction on the workshop of the background and current missions of FuTURE FORUM. As an international platform for communication and cooperation, FuTURE FORUM has been working to provide the members with various opportunities for participating in the international communication and cooperation and hoping to make consistent effort to significantly contribute to introducing to the world the mobile communication technologies independently developed by China.
