Seminar on System and Technology Requirement of IMT-Advanced

 Seminar     |       2007/9/26

Seminar on System and Technology Requirement of IMT-Advanced was held in Beijing Xiyuan Hotel on September 25th of 2007. It is expected that consensus could be reached to the maximum degree through the communication organized by FuTURE FORUM on the ITU Circular Letter on IMT-Advanced technology and standard that is supposed to be completed by January 2008. Prof. You Xiaohu, Secretary-General of FuTURE FORUM, hosted the seminar while Mr. Zhang Xinsheng, Vice Director of Department of Science and Technology of MII, made a summary for the seminar. Representatives from several forum members including China Mobile, NSN, NTT DoCoMo, Samsung, Datang, and Huawei gave excellent presentations on the technologies involved in the ITU Circular Letter as well as on the development of some candidate IMT-A technologies.

The minimum technical requirements involve the definitions of bandwidth, transmission rate, system capacity, anti-fading performance, spectrum utilization and mobility. It is supposed that IMT-Advanced should achieve the transmission rate at 100Mbps and 1Gbps respectively in highly and less mobile environment. The representative from China Mobile made a detailed analysis on the above definitions from the aspects of voice service, data service and interactive service, and suggested to apply 4*4 antennas to achieve 1.5Gbps download rate and 1Gbps upload rate with 100M bandwidth. Samsung reported that they had achieved 1Gbps the transmission rate in non-mobile environment and 100Mbps transmission rate while moving at a speed of 60km/h, which has already met the requirement of IMT-Advanced. NTT DoCoMo introduced their outfield trial system in which the transmission rate was increased to 5Gbps and the number of antennas was raised from 6 to 12 while the unique signal receiving and processing technique contributed to increasing the transmission rate and greatly improving the spectrum utilization. Ericsson preferred the smooth evolution of IMT-Advanced technology expecting to realize better performance while cutting down the cost. The representatives from the forum members put forward frankly and sincerely their suggestions and analyses on IMT-Advanced technical requirements. All the representatives regarded it as beneficial to reach fundamental consensus through effective communication before submitting proposals to ITU. The opinions provided by various enterprises will act as part of the preparation for the submission of the ITU Circular Letter on IMT-Advanced technology and standard as well as for certain relative research done by China.

Director Zhang made a summary at the end of the seminar in which he fully affirmed the effort FuTURE FORUM had made to propel the joint development and again stressed the importance of research on requirement. Director Zhang pointed out that it is necessary to realize a win-win situation through communication and collaboration in such a complex environment for the development of B3G technology. FuTURE FORUM will give full play to its role as an international platform for communication, continue to organized more profound research, make more effort to promote the development of future mobile communication technology and provide valuable references for the government to make wise decisions.
